Solar for businesses
If you have a business with a flat roof, a large parking lot, or other underutilized spaces, it only makes sense to install some solar panels there. A solar array on your parking lot provides additional benefits: it will protect the vehicles from sun and rain, with potential to integrate EV charging stations.
A solar installation will be particularly profitable for offices and most workshops, whose energy needs are almost entirely during the day. Depending on the nature and level of your electricity needs, the investment can pay for itself and become profitable in ~5 years.
Long-Term Stability and Predictability
Having your own photovoltaic plant will improve your ability to plan and budget for the future. This is becoming more and more important in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing environment. Having your own, cheap electricity production will let you stop worrying about the electricity bills and focus on building up a resilient and thriving business.
Easing the regulatory burden: ESG and building energy efficiency
You will be facing increasingly complex and burdensome regulatory requirements and reporting obligations soon. This has two main components:
1. CSRD
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive will introduce stringent and thorough reporting requirements for medium and large businesses, which will gradually be rolled down to smaller companies as well. Simply put, you will have to report on the impacts from your business on society and the environment and demonstrate responsible corporate governance.
The scope and complexity of the annual reporting will be significant; one of the major requirements will be to report on your energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. If you have a good share of solar in your energy mix, this will make at least that part of the reporting simpler and easier each year.
2. EPBD
The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive is part of a concerted push by the EU to lower the carbon emissions associated with buildings. This can be achieved with rooftop photovoltaics, better insulation, and more efficient appliances. A solar array with a battery and a heat pump is the most cost- and energy-efficient solution and will cause a considerable reduction of your energy and air conditioning costs.
