1. Price and return on investment
Homeowner electricity prices in Bulgaria are regulated by the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission and are kept at artificially low prices by European standards. The current average price after taxes and fees is around 25 Bulgarian cents per kWh. At that level, it may look like a solar array will pay for itself in 7–10 years. However, this does not factor in future electricity price increases.
Energy prices have been rising steadily for decades and we do not expect this to change in the foreseeable future. Factors to consider:
- rapid, power-hungry technological progress (especially IT and AI infrastructure, electric cars)
- steady, long-term inflation
- rising temperatures: summers are getting unbearable without air conditioning
The low household energy prices in Bulgaria are effectively a subsidy and can be lifted at any time; most market insiders expect this to happen. When it does, most households will be in for an unwelcome surprise in their electricity bills. This will increase demand for photovoltaics, making installation potentially less accessible or affordable.

2. Energy security and independence
Having your own solar array will bring you benefits beyond cheaper energy. It will give you a backup if the grid fails. The Bulgarian distribution grid is already stressed by the growing energy demands and worsening weather conditions: wildfires, floods, and power outages are on the rise. If you have solar panels — especially with a battery — you will no longer be subject to the whims of external factors beyond your control.
